Person Centred CounsellingA Person Centered approach, grounded in Humanistic philosophy, is based on the premise that each individual has a profound capacity for change with the ability to develop a more fulfilling and satisfying life. We can trust in the inner resources of the client to find their own answers and direction.
In the therapeutic environment the client may develop a greater understanding of the way they interact with the world around them. This leads to greater self-awareness and acceptance, thus empowering the client to make their own choices and take control over their own lives.
It is the client who knows what hurts and has the capacity within the safety of a therapeutic relationship to begin a healing process.
For a therapeutic environment to be safe, supportive and challenging, certain conditions need to be in place and held in a consistent and proessional manner:
* A deep acceptance of the person
* A desire to understand that person
* A commitment to being genuine in the relationship
More information about different theoretical approaches can be found at the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP)
